White Sulphur Springs

28th August Travel to White Sulphur Springs

We spent the day travelling south from Glacier NP on a pretty boring road; fairly flat agricultural grasslands.
We stopped in Great Falls for lunch and then south onto SR 89.  This road took us through the Lewis and Clerk National Forest which was very pretty.

We saw deer at the side of the road in a few places and at one point Alison looked down a grassy canyon to see a black bear clambering up the steep slopes.

29th August White Sulphur Springs

A domestic morning and then we visited the Natural Mineral Springs in the town.  These springs have been used for centuries by the local Native Indian Tribes; the Blackfeet, Flathead and Crow.  As they were normally warring tribes they had an official ‘truce’ in this area so they could all take advantage of the healing qualities of the warm springs.  We spent the afternoon relaxing in the three, sulphurous, pools of different temperature; 98F, 102F and 106F – this was really a bit too hot!

In the evening we joined the campsite for the ice-cream social and the owner enlightening us with information about the area.

30th August Travel to Gardiner

Another long drive through flat grasslands down SR 89 to Livingston and then down to Gardiner.  We follow the Yellowstone River valley down to Gardiner which is near the north entrance of Yellowstone which is in Montana.
